Admission Timeline
A tool for juniors & seniors considering SMU
You're already off to a great start on your college search:
  checked box Check out www.smumn.edu!
     
JUNIOR YEAR
October to December
  check box Visit colleges during fall break.
  check box Attend local college nights, where many colleges come together to meet informally with students.
  check box Meet with college representatives when they visit your high school.
  check box Use the college search engine at www.collegeboard.com
January to March
  check box Register to take standardized tests like the ACT or SAT. Have results sent to SMU using these codes:
ACT: 2148 & SAT: 6632
  check box Meet with your college counselor to draft a prospective college list.
  check box Investigate schools on your prospective college list.
  check box Visit prospective colleges over spring break, if possible.
April / May to early June
  check box Create a resume for yourself so when you begin to apply to colleges, you will remember your activities and honors.
  check box Take AP Exams.
  check box Work hard to make your junior-year grades as good as possible!
Mid-June to Mid-August
  check box Continue to research schools on your prospective college list.
  check box Remember Minnesota Private College Week – the last week of June!
  check box Visit prospective schools over the summer, if possible.
  check box Read college literature and guide books and visit college websites.
  check box Call, write or email to get on mailing lists for all of your prospective schools.
  check box Begin working on an essay if your prospective colleges require one.
  check box Fill out a sample application form to become familiar with the process and collect all the information you will typically need.
     
SENIOR YEAR
Mid-August to September
  check box Meet with your college counselor to finalize your college application list.
  check box Re-register to take the ACT, SAT I and/or SAT II, if needed.
  check box Work on college application essays.
  check box Decide which teachers you’ll ask to write recommendation letters, if needed.
October
  check box Watch for Saint Mary's first Group Overnight Visit!
  check box If you haven't visited already, do so during Minnesota Education Days (formerly MEA).
  check box Give your college counselor his/her portion of an application at least two weeks before its due date.
  check box Confirm plans for your teacher recommendation.
November
  check box Submit your application if you haven't already done so, and don't forget that it's free to apply online at www.smumn.edu/apply!
  check box Watch for Saint Mary's second Group Overnight Visit.
  check box Sign up for one of our coveted Chicago interview slots.
December
  check box Start looking at SMU's Merit-Based Scholarships, getting additional letters of recommendation, essays and other material needed together.
January
  check box Come to our Martin Luther King Jr. Open House and Overnight
  check box Join us at our annual Twin Cities Reception
  check box Have your parents take part in a lunch-hour Financial Aid Chat online.
  check box Saint Mary's scholarship applications are due on the 31st!
February
  check box If you haven't already, schedule your auditions for our Music and Theatre Scholarships.
  check box Watch for our third Group Overnight Visit.
  check box Come to the Chicago Reception if you live in the area.
March
  check box FAFSA Priority Deadline – March 15th! SMU's FAFSA code is 002380.
  check box Watch for our fourth and last Group Overnight Visit.
  check box Save your spot for one of our coveted Twin Cities interview slots.
April
  check box Talk or meet with your Admissions Counselor to review your Financial Aid Award.
May
  check box Saint Mary's Confirmation Deadline is May 1st!
  check box Select a day for New Student Orientation & Registration.
  check box Line up your summer job.
  check box Get ready to graduate!
June
  check box Attend one of our New Student Orientation & Registration sessions
July
  check box Make certain all final transcripts – both high school as well as college (CIS, PSEO), including AP scores – have been sent to our Registrar's Office.
August
  check box Move onto campus and into your new home at Saint Mary's!
