Rolling Admission
We're on a roll... and you can still apply!
If you’re a high school senior or a transfer student and sure of your plans for next fall, congratulations! We wish you the best of college experiences!
And if you’re still thinking it over, then we hope you’ll keep Saint Mary’s as one of your options.
At this time, SMU has the second largest number of applicants in our history. However, until accepted students make their final decisions, we are welcoming new applicants – that's how "rolling admission" works.
Check out the links below to learn more about rolling admission, scholarships and financial aid.

Rolling... Admission
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Saint Mary's has a rolling admission policy. That means we accept qualified applicants in the order in which they apply, with admission decisions generally made within a week.
- While your academic ability and high school record are at the forefront of admission decisions, we also consider recommendations, activities, community involvement and leadership.
- We waive the application fee for students applying online at smumn.edu/apply.
LAST YEAR'S CLASS
- The middle 50% of our first-year students had high school GPAs that ranged from 2.67 to 3.67. With one-quarter of our students above this level and one-quarter below, this will show you where you'd fit into the SMU academic community.
- The ACT scores of the middle 50% of our students ranged from 19 to 25. Some students are unduly concerned about test scores. Our studies show that your high school record is a far better predictor of success at SMU.

Rolling... Scholarships
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- SMU also awards most scholarships on a rolling basis. You'll learn about any earned scholarships within one week of being admitted.
- Scholarships ranging from $7,000 to $15,000 are based on your abilities, not on financial need.
- We plan to award scholarships to more than three-quarters of all first-year students. Your odds are pretty good.
Saint Mary's University of Minnesota has created the Brother James Miller Program for Access, designed to assist good students in the low- to middle-income range who might not otherwise be able to afford a private college. Saint Mary's guarantees that comprehensive charges for all qualified freshmen enrolling at the Winona campus will be equal to or less than the cost to in-state students attending the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. No separate application is necessary! To qualify for the Brother James Miller Scholarship for Access, students must:
- apply for admission to SMU;
- file a FAFSA;
- have a parental adjusted gross income of $100,000 or less; and
- have a “B” cumulative grade point average.
Rolling... Financial Aid
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- SMU has a long-standing commitment to remain affordable to all qualified applicants – that's why we keep our costs far below those of comparable colleges.
- More than 75% of our students receive scholarships, grants, loans and campus jobs.
- We need your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), which you can complete online at fafsa.ed.gov.
SMU's code is 002380 and we should receive the results within 48 hours. Using the FAFSA analysis to determine how much you and your family can afford and which state and federal programs you will receive, SMU puts together a financial aid package that gives you options on how to manage your investment in an SMU education. Of course, this is on a rolling basis, too. If we already have your FAFSA when you're admitted, you should have a financial aid decision the following week.If you filed a FAFSA but didn't have the results sent to SMU:
- Find your GPA, test scores and Expected Family Income (EFC) from the FAFSA.
- Call us at (800) 635-5987, Ext. 1700 with those three numbers.
- We'll do a quick calculation and let you know what to expect in financial aid at Saint Mary's.
