Music Industry Major
Major Overview

62 credits

Why Music Industry?

The Music Industry program is for students interested in the business and technology aspects of the music industry. Within the Music Industry major students may further refine their focus on music business or music technology. The degree program shares a common core of required music courses that reflect the needs of today's musician in an ever-changing, high-tech world. By completing a four-year B.A. degree, students have the advantage of a liberal arts education from Saint Mary's University and techinical training in music.

Saint Mary's has offered music business degrees for over 25 years. Students wishing to pursue a career in music business take courses from the Business Department. They also gain valuable job experience through off-campus, for-credit internships in the professional world of music business. Examples of internship sites include: Universal Music Group, Minneapolis; Minnesota Public Radio; Warner, Elekra Asylum Records, Barrington, Ill.; KNXR Studios and Schmitt Music, Rochester, Minn.; Soundstations Studio and Leithold’s Music, La Crosse, Wis.; and the Wenger Music Corp.

Students may also elect to gain real-world experience in music technology with an understanding and working knowledge of basic recording techniques, as well as learning how to do live sound. Elective courses, including a field exploration project, allow students to use the knowledge and experience gained from their course work, or complete an off-campus internship. Students who focus on music technology have the opportunity to benefit from our professional partnership with Soundstation Studios in La Crosse, Wis., owned and operated by Grammy-winner Brett Huus.
