Full-time Equivalent

Calculating student FTE - Full-time Equivalent
FTE is most commonly calculated for students, but can also be calculated for faculty. Student full-time equivalent figures are calculated using students registered by the fall freeze date. The data freeze dates are approximately the tenth day of classes for the Winona campus and during approximately the sixth week of the term for the Twin Cities campus. The student FTE can be calculated using one of three unique methods. The Office of Institutional Research will report FTE using the IPEDS method if provided no direction on which method of calculation is preferred.

IPEDS Method

The number of FTE students is calculated based on fall student headcounts as reported by the institution on the IPEDS Enrollment. The full-time equivalent of the institution's part-time enrollment is estimated by multiplying the factors noted below times the part-time headcount. These are then added to the full-time enrollment headcounts to obtain an FTE for all students enrolled in the fall. This formula is used to produce an FTE that is used annually in the Digest of Education Statistics.

Part-time undergraduate enrollment (.392857)

Part-time graduate enrollment (.382059)

1/3 Method
The full-time equivalent of the institution's part-time enrollment is estimated by multiplying all part-time students by 1/3. These are then added to the full-time enrollment headcounts to obtain an FTE for all students enrolled in the fall.

Empower Method
The Empower method utilizes the capability of the Empower database system to obtain the actual percentage of each part-time student to that of a full-time. The summation of the actual percentages are then added to the full-time enrollment headcounts to obtain an FTE for all students enrolled in the fall.
