Position Responsibilities
The Assistant Director of Strategic Communications serves Saint Mary's University of Minnesota—a university that spans multiple locations and offers numerous programs—as a member of its marketing and communication division. The individual in this role will be a skilled communicator who is adept in copy writing, editing, and media relations. This role will work across multiple platforms to communicate effectively—and enhance Saint Mary’s reputation—with prospective students, alumni, benefactors, and other key constituents. Essential to the role is the ability to tell the Saint Mary’s story.
Job responsibilities include:
  • Create written content and provide editorial support in both print and digital formats for a variety of publications and clients including the offices of admission and alumni and development, as well as other areas across the university.
  • Write and edit copy for various communications, including news releases; media advisories; pitches; talking points; media guides; experts lists; newsletters; reports; communication plans for the university and clients; stories and content for publications (online and print); and more.
  • Develop and implement social media plans, strategies, and tactics to reach and engage specific and strategic audiences for the university to achieve its goals.
  • Assist with public relations and media relations university-wide, including content creation and repurposing, as well as monitoring and analysis to increase market awareness, relevance, and choice. 
  • Photograph and video university events and other subject matter in a manner that conveys strong visual storytelling.
  • Serve as counsel on crisis and issues communications and, as appropriate, serve as a university spokesperson. Serve on university emergency communication teams.

  • The ability to see and understand big-picture goals while ensuring accuracy and attention to detail in day-to-day projects
  • The ability to travel from Minneapolis-based office to other university locations, as needed

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in marketing or public relations-related area.
  • 3-5 years of experience in public relations/communications. 
  • Solid experience in and understanding of the following: advertising, lead generation, analytics, the internet, social media, Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word), and Google Analytics. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, photography, and videography desired.
