Position Responsibilities

The Assistant Director of Access Services is responsible for providing effective academic accommodations that address an individual’s unique learning needs. The assistant director of Access Services will evaluate documentation, provide appropriate accommodations, and act as a resource/advocate to assist students in meeting their academic goals and to ensure equity of opportunity in an educational environment that includes face to face, blended, and online courses. In addition, the assistant director will serve as a resource to faculty/staff, IT, and Ed Tech to ensure access to all and a campus community that disabilities are a valuable aspect of our diverse community.

  • Knowledge of assistive technologies for varying disabilities and needs with extensive experience in the creation of accessible solutions for individuals with disabilities, preferably in higher education.
  • Conduct individual meetings with each student with a disability to interpret confidential assessment or medical documentation to implement accommodations and educate students on policies and procedures as they relate to the university and Access Services.
  • Educate students on self-advocacy skills and communication with faculty regarding accommodations.
  • Leadership in campus wide initiatives supporting Universal Design Learning (UDL). Design, market and facilitate workshops for students and faculty using assistive technology.
  • Create, administer, and implement assessment and evaluation for Access Services on an annual basis and implement continuous improvements based on the data provided and best practice for disability services.
  • Develop and manage the Access Services budget by determining current expenses, management of the expenditures, and prioritizing needs of the office.
  • Implement policies and procedures as they relate to ADA compliance and Universal Design Learning (UDL).
  • Determine temporary disability accommodations and notification of faculty related to temporary disabilities. 
  • Engage in retention services and best practices.
  • Align services with current CAS standards and Saint Mary’s Strategic Plan.

Education and Experience
  • Master’s degree required in education, psychology, counseling, learning disabilities, or a closely related field.
  • Ability to interpret pyscho-educational diagnostic reports.
  • Recent experience required providing academic support services to students with disabilities, preferably in higher education.
  • Current knowledge of law, policy, practice, and literature on a variety of disability services in higher education.
  • Knowledge of FERPA and legislation in higher education. 
  • Strong knowledge of ADA, Section 504, and Section 508 legislation; accessibility guidelines, including WCAG, WAI-ARIA; and UDL principles.
