Position Responsibilities

The Student Success and First Generation team is accepting applications for an Assistant Director of First Generation Initiative and Learning Services to support the overall success of students from onboarding to commencement. This position oversees the FGI Scholars program and supports other students providing advising, learning assistance, academic, social, and cultural support to all students, especially first generation students. This role works with the Director to support the Countdown to College (C2C) and tutoring coordinator regarding all aspects of the summer C2C program. Job responsibilities include: 

  • Serve as Early Alert (EA) case manager to distribute and refer students; coordinate efforts of committee to ensure issues are addressed.
  • Coach FGI students toward setting goals for a career, and life, and achieving academic success. 
  • Stay connected with students, especially first generation students, and make referrals to other services when necessary.
  • Coordinate and plan orientation, monthly gatherings and events, class meetings, guided study, and regular communication with FGI students.
  • Support the C2C and tutoring coordinator with the selection and application process of C2C students and First Generation Initiative Scholars.
  • Assist the Director with collaborating with Faculty to implement support initiatives for their courses and develop early intervention strategies.
  • Work with the English department to support the writing labs each semester that support students in E130 – writing composition.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate methods to identify and outreach to target populations, including collaboration with other College departments.
  • Assist the director with overseeing the training of student employees to serve in peer-assisted learning opportunities, e.g. Peer Learning Assistant, tutors, etc.
  • In conjunction with the Dean of Student Success and First Generation Initiative, collaborate with the office of advancement with benefactor relations. 
Essential Skills and Abilities

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational and project management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and experience developing strong professional relationships and communicating effectively with diverse groups of people.
  • Strong computer skills: solid understanding and use of the Internet, social media, and Microsoft Office. Relational databases and CRM software experience strongly encouraged.
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends as required.

Education and Experience
  • Master’s degree required; prefer Counseling, Higher Education, Education, or related field.
  • At least 2 years of experience in related position required; 3-5 years preferred. Equivalent professional experience with writing, writing tutoring, etc.
  • Computer knowledge of MS Office and relevant applications; ability to use, assess, and manage technology and information systems in the enrollment / student support services area.
  • Bilingual candidates strongly preferred.
