Position Responsibilities

Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota invites applications for an Assistant Professor of English beginning fall semester 2019. This one-year appointment teaches 11-12 credits per semester and includes lower division writing courses, literature courses that can contribute to our integrated General Education Program, and/or professional writing courses, depending on the needs of the department. Opportunities for online teaching, interdisciplinary collaboration, and mentoring of underrepresented students may also be available. The position requires strong, adaptable teaching, mentoring of undergraduate students, and service within the department and institution as appropriate.

Essential Skills and Abilities
  • Effective teaching at the college level
  • Student advising to reinforce course content, academic sequence, and program selections that define and develop educational degree plans
  • Assessment of student learning
  • Department administrative work and serve on faculty committees as required
  • Active scholarship to further knowledge and stay current in the discipline
  • Participation in commencement exercises and other required university commitments
  The successful candidate must support, respect, and advance the mission of Saint Mary's University as a Lasallian Catholic institution.
Education and Experience
  • An earned doctoral degree in English (Ph.D.) or similar discipline is preferred.
  • Graduate course work in rhetoric and composition or its professional equivalent.
  • Experience in bridge or stretch composition programs
  • Experience teaching business writing in a university or professional setting
