Position Responsibilities

The Marketing and Communication team is seeking a communications specialist to tell the many stories of Saint Mary’s through compelling long and short-form content. Reporting to the Senior Director for Communications, this role will handle both internal and external communications, including stories, blogs, social media posts, video scripts, and press releases/pitches. Channels include newsletters, web copy, magazines, social media, speechwriting, video and audio scripts, reputation management, and PR.

All work done by the position will maintain, enhance and expand the image and reputation of Saint Mary’s University. The role is both strategic (i.e. project management, communication planning) and tactical (i.e. writing, posting, distributing, management of lists, pitching media, implementing communication plans). 

  • Research and write content including researching topics and interviewing students, alumni, faculty, staff and external subjects
  • Create and implement communication plans including strategy around messaging, channels, audiences, and metrics both for internal and external purposes
  • Edit, amend or develop content for use across multiple channels, including long- and short-form content
  • Edit and proof one’s own work and that of others for consistency of tone and style, and accuracy of punctuation, grammar and usage
  • Manage social media accounts as directed by supervisor
  • Maintain the editorial calendar and support our content strategy
  • Manage and expand media and public relations; build relationships with reporters, producers and other media contacts in the Twin Cities, Rochester and Winona areas 
  • Prepare proactive statements and work on issues mitigation as assigned
Essential Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent writing, editing, proofreading, and verbal communication skills
  • Responsive, ability to prioritize and work under deadlines, strong organizational skills
  • Results-orientated with a desire to collaborate with numerous teams to ensure successful communication of desired message
  • Knowledge and experience in writing content for multiple channels
  • Experience and confidence using Microsoft office, posting to social media channels, tracking content, disseminating information through technology
  • Ability to fact-check and be accurate
  • Knowledge of AP style
  • Must be available on call, both after hours and on weekends if needed

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, marketing, journalism or related field required
  • Three to five years related experience
  • Social media posting and tracking experience
  • Public and media relations experience preferred
  • Understanding of marketing preferred
  • Experience with employee/internal communications and managing newsletters preferred
