Position Responsibilities

The core faculty member in the Doctor of Nursing Practice in the Nurse Anesthesia program develops, teaches, monitors, and evaluates courses in the professional, clinical, and research cores for the doctoral program. This position guides the completion of clinical projects. This role acts as a resource for professional and community connections for personal and professional development. In all job responsibilities, the core faculty member must support, respect, and advance the mission of Saint Mary's University as a Lasallian Catholic institution.

Teaching and Advising

  • Teach 18-24 graduate level credits per year.
  • Prepare and deliver assigned courses in an educationally effective manner.
  • Abide by all School of Graduate and Professional Programs (SGPP) policies and procedures and reinforce them in course delivery and administration.
  • Develop course syllabi according to University policy.
  • Participate in the evaluation of textbooks and other learning materials. 
  • Assist in maintaining a current curriculum map that ensures coordination and relevancy of the academic curriculum.
  • Teach and coordinate students work with simulated patient care experiences.        
  • Serve as a clinical project advisor for up to ten students.
  • Serve as academic advisor.
  • Provide effective assistance to students with achieving success.

Program Administration

  • Attend and assist in planning program faculty meetings.
  • Contribute to the administration of the program.
  • Examine library holdings and recommend additions.
  • Assist in the ongoing evaluation of the program, which includes program review and assessment of student learning initiatives. 
  • Assist in the development of new courses and programs.
  • Assist in the development of program-specific policies as necessary and according to University policy.
  • Prepare and submit reports on program activities, as necessary.
  • Assist in preparing for the Program’s accreditation process by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs.
  • Participate in student affairs such as orientation, advising and summative paper presentations.

University Activities

  • Participate in University activities such as faculty development activities, accreditation visits, convocations, commencements and celebrations.
  • Participate and contribute to the University mission by demonstrating a commitment to the LaSallian philosophy.
  • Attend faculty meetings, faculty workshops, university and program committees as needed and other meetings as required.
  • Serve on the SGPP and University committees and taskforces.


  • Scholarly activity is expected in relation to the disciplinary area represented by the position and includes such work as consultation, advisory board membership, conference presentation, grant writing, research activity, publication, and collaboration on professional projects.
Essential Skills and Abilities

The faculty member must have highly developed professional expertise related to the specific program and course assignment, have an affinity to teach adult students and an eagerness to develop engaging delivery and assessment approaches. The ability to work collaboratively and effectively within a team structure is an essential quality to carry out the mission of the University.

Education and Experience
  • Unencumbered Professional Registered Nurse License.
  • Current certification as a Nurse Anesthetist with five years’ experience.
  • Doctoral degree required. 
  • Excellent communication and organization skills are required. 
  • Experience in graduate teaching and advising in a science-related field.  
  • Experience with instructional technology and distance delivery of instruction preferred.
