Position Responsibilities

Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota invites applications for Dean of the College. The Dean of the College effectively serves as Dean of Arts and Humanities and oversees all academic matters not otherwise handled by the other three constituent schools of Saint Mary’s University. Reporting to the Provost and Dean of Faculties, this position will lead a number of key strategic initiatives and emerging priorities for the undergraduate, liberal arts college at the Winona Campus. In concert with the university’s new strategic plan and its distinctive Lasallian Catholic mission, the Dean will establish and champion an inspiring vision for the college that comprises a set of short, medium, and long-term goals designed to maintain the college’s excellence, strengthen interdisciplinary work, and secure resources for development and expansion. The Dean also serves on the University Academic Council and has responsibility for the strategic, programmatic, financial, fundraising, and management operations that support the mission of the School and its role within the university. A complete profile providing a full description of this opportunity can be accessed here.

  • Subject matter expertise in contemporary issues in liberal arts higher education, along with the impact on traditional, non-traditional and online learners, as well as regulatory, governmental, and public media issues affecting higher education.
  • Judgment, diplomacy, discretion, and professionalism skills.
  The successful candidate must support, respect, and advance the mission of Saint Mary's University as a Lasallian Catholic institution.
Education and Experience
  • An earned Ph.D. or similar terminal degree is required, with an academic record sufficient to merit appointment as a tenured professor.
  • Significant prior teaching experience in a related discipline strongly preferred.
  • 10 years of progressive academic leadership experience in higher education in a senior level/executive academic post.
  • Successful administrative experience at an HLC-accredited college at the level of academic department head, assistant dean, or dean or other comparable administrative experience that includes influencing and collaborating with executive level leaders.
  • Experience successfully developing and executing academic strategies in a complex, comprehensive, multi-campus university.
  • Experience with finding, applying for, and securing resources through grants and foundations.
  • Competent financial literacy with fiscal skills and business acumen necessary to allocate resources effectively and efficiently among competing and compelling needs of the institution and its mission.
