Position Responsibilities

Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota invites applications for Dean of the School of Education. Reporting to the Provost and Dean of Faculties, the Dean is the chief administrative, fiscal, and academic officer for the School of Education (the “School”) which comprises both undergraduate and graduate education. The Dean provides leadership of the School’s academic programs, and assesses the effectiveness and promotes the prominence of the School’s educational programs, research activities, outreach and partnership programs, advancement and development, and international education initiatives. The Dean also serves on the University Academic Council and has responsibility for the strategic, programmatic, financial, fundraising, and management operations that support the mission of the School and its role within the university.  A complete profile providing a full description of this opportunity can be accessed here. The position will office out of either the Twin Cities or Winona campus, with regular travel required between locations.

  • Subject matter expertise in contemporary issues in higher education in general and educational pedagogy in particular, along with their impact on traditional, non-traditional and online learners, as well as regulatory, governmental, and public media issues affecting higher education.
  • Judgment, diplomacy, discretion, and professionalism skills.
  The successful candidate must support, respect, and advance the mission of Saint Mary's University as a Lasallian Catholic institution.
Education and Experience
  • An earned Ph.D. or similar terminal degree is required, with an academic record sufficient to merit appointment as a tenured professor.
  • Significant prior teaching experience strongly preferred.
  • 5-7 years of progressive academic leadership experience in higher education in a senior level/executive academic post, with experience in Catholic higher education preferred.
  • Successful administrative experience at an HLC-accredited college at the level of academic department head, assistant dean, or dean or other comparable administrative experience that includes influencing and collaborating with executive level leaders.
  • Experience successfully developing and executing academic strategies in a complex, comprehensive, multi-campus university.
  • Experience with finding, applying for, and securing resources through grants and foundations.
  • Competent financial literacy with fiscal skills and business acumen necessary to allocate resources effectively and efficiently among competing and compelling needs of the institution and its mission.
