Position Responsibilities

Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota is seeking a Department Chair of Social Work Programs and Program Director for the Master of Social Work (MSW) program. The Department Chair and Program Director works within a community of professionals dedicated to providing relevant, rigorous, and relational academic experiences for learners. The role is accountable for overall department and program administration, faculty and curricular leadership, student advising, faculty professional development and university service activities. The position is responsible for ensuring program vitality and academic quality by balancing administrative and academic functions that support a rigorous approach to teaching clinical social work and meeting student learning goals. The person in this role must support, respect, and advance the mission of Saint Mary's University as a Lasallian Catholic institution by understanding and supporting the alignment between the Lasallian core principles of Inclusive Community, Respect for All Persons, and Concern for the Poor and Social Justice; the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics; and the values of the Catholic Social Workers National Association.

The Department Chair's duties and responsibilities may include but not be limited to items in the following general areas: 

  • Maintain updated knowledge of and compliance with specialty accreditation, licensing regulations, and professional authorizations, leading programmatic accreditation that ensures alignment to accreditation requirements and standards of the Council on Social Work Education
  • Development and supervision of departmental curriculum and assessment and overall departmental agenda 
  • Evaluation of Faculty
  • Develop the department teaching schedule to ensure a schedule that accounts for student progression and appropriate class sizes and teaching loads are maintained
  • Conduct regular department and faculty meetings to promote coherence in curriculum implementation and sharing of best practices 
  • Recruit, hire, and maintain a roster of exceptionally qualified faculty using a variety of sources; orient new faculty and ensure development and training
  • Evaluate faculty performance by reviewing student evaluations, observing classes, and monitoring professional and scholarly productivity.   

The Chair and Program Director for the Master in Social Work is accountable for overall program administration, faculty and curricular leadership, and faculty professional development and university service activities. 

Program Administration
Works with the professionals in the many departments supporting marketing, student services, and budgeting and fiscal accountability, and the School Dean to: 

  • Collaborate with online service partner to facilitate the development of a multi-year marketing and visibility campaign, ensuring alignment of messaging tied to program outcomes 
  • Establish and monitor annual enrollment goals 
  • Ensure prompt registration of accepted students 
  • Ensure that all students have an orientation to the program 
  • Monitor academic status of students (probation, leaves, retention, degree completion) 
  • Administer the summative activities for students’ completion of the program 
  • Administer academic policies as documented in the Catalog & Student Handbook 
  • Represent the value of the program to others both inside and outside the University 
  • Maintain relationships in the community for the purpose of recruiting and marketing 
  • Forecast income and expenses, create multi-year budgets, and monitor program fiscal performance and reporting
  • Ensure that all expenses are processed in an accurate, timely, and prudent manner 
  • Hire, supervise, and develop a team of program staff to include some/all of: program coordinators, assistant/associate program directors, field service supervisors, and faculty.

Curriculum Leadership 

Works with the Director of Curriculum and Assessment and School Dean to: 

  • Monitor the development and approval of all syllabi for all courses 
  • Conduct program reviews at least every three years 
  • Maintain curricular relevance through ongoing connections within the discipline/industry including formal advisory committees and various environmental scanning approaches 
  • Implement program specialty accreditation and licensure processes 
  • Implement assessment of student learning initiatives 
  • Develop new programs and/or instructional approaches as appropriate for the medium of delivery and changes in the field.  

Professional Development and University Service 

Works with School Dean to: 

  • Maintain and enhance disciplinary expertise and scholarship 
  • Support and advance the University’s Lasallian Catholic mission, heritage and charism 
  • Contribute to the governance structure of both the College and SGPP by committee involvement 
  • Participate in school and University celebrations (commencements, convocations, campus events) 
  • Participate in University initiatives and task forces.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and multi-tasking skills with proven ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with adult learners, faculty and other professionals in academic settings and with community partners.
  • Understanding of online education and how to effectively engage students to maximize their online learning experience.  
  • Professional decorum and ethical decision-making.
  • Creation/maintenance of a collegial spirit among students, faculty, and colleagues. 
  • Effective interpersonal and supervisory skills in recruitment, performance management, coaching/counseling.

Education and Experience
  • A doctoral degree in social work is preferred, although an individual with a master’s degree in social work and extensive experience in the field and in an academic setting will be considered. 
  • At least five years practice experience in the field of social work.
  • Experience in higher education is preferred which includes teaching, program development, and/or administration, especially experience with the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accreditation standards.
  • Hold a minimum credential of LISW licensure.
