Position Responsibilities
The Director of Brand and Creative Services serves Saint Mary's University of Minnesota—a university that spans multiple locations and offers numerous programs. This role combines creative direction, design, and production of print and digital materials university-wide. The role works closely with the director of external relations and director of strategic marketing to ensure goals for the division’s plan are met.  In addition, this strategic leadership position is integral to convey the institution’s brand visually to various audiences to positively impact the university’s goals, including for enrollment, fundraising, and visibility.
 
Creative Direction (25%)
  • Lead in the creation of materials that appeal to a variety of people so various audiences recognize and favorably perceive Saint Mary’s University.
  • Develop and adapt graphic identity standards to position the university as innovative in the marketplace.
  • Manage vendors and other designers (internal or external).
  • Serve as art director for photography, videography, signage, events, and more for a variety of projects university-wide.
  • Assist in providing leadership for more efficient and effective processes for the department, spread across multiple locations.
Design (40%)
  • Design and create print and digital materials, and coordinate production of such materials for a variety of internal clients for external audiences, including advertisements (print and digital), magazines, brochures, invitations, websites, and/or application designs.
  • Fulfill project requests from idea generation to completion; including concept, design and layout, production and coordination and fulfillment.
Brand Management (20%)
  • Serves as brand champion to evolve the expression of the university’s brand and relevancy to multiple stakeholder groups.
  • Evolve and adapt the brand and its elements to foster greater affinity with students, faculty, staff, alumni and prospective students.
  • Interpret the Saint Mary’s brand and adhere to and communicate brand standards and identity guidelines to ensure high quality and consistent visuals and messages exist across various media.

Budgeting and Planning (15%)

  • Manage the project design budgets, including external vendors and project consultants.
  • Work with project manager to review, monitor, and complete projects and corresponding staff workloads.
  • Lead an effective production process of project deliverables to on-time completion and within approved budget parameters.
  • Conduct ongoing research and concept testing so design concepts and materials foster increased engagement.
Essential Skills and Abilities
  • Experience as a graphic designer in digital and print media, including possessing excellent graphical and typographical design skills and superlative production design skills with an awareness of graphic and advertising trends.
  • Experience with print vendor management and knowledge of printing processes and a desire to continuously stay abreast of technology innovations in the field.
  • Aptitude in creative art direction, including working knowledge of photography/videography.
  • Project management skills and the ability to think strategically, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Able to work in a team environment to deliver results and advance division goals.
  • Customer service orientation with client relationship management skills.
  • Ability to travel from Minneapolis-based office to other university locations, including Rochester and Winona, as needed.
  The successful candidate must support, respect, and advance the mission of Saint Mary's University as a Lasallian Catholic institution.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or a related field required; MFA or similar advanced degree preferred.
  • Seven plus years of experience in graphic design and production of print and digital materials.
  • Strong understanding of marketing and branding with the ability to achieve creative results that produce return on investment in enrollment and fundraising.
  • Working knowledge of Mac computer hardware and software programs for design, including Adobe Creative Cloud Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat), Font Management Systems, Microsoft Office, and Google applications.
