Position Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Vice Provost for Faculties and Academic Affairs, the Director of Curriculum and Assessment provides leadership for curricular and academic evaluative processes that support a single catalog and annual reporting system across the University. The Director oversees the Learning Design Team's work on program development, course development, and internal online course builds. The Director also manages related evaluative processes, including assessment of student learning at the program level; program review; course evaluation; and preparing materials and leading meetings for the University Program Planning (UPP) Committee. 

Specifically, the Director of Curriculum and Assessment

  • Creates templates and processes for effective UPP operations and facilitates UPP meetings.
  • Facilitates, in collaboration with the deans and curriculum committees, the design and approval of the curricular structure for new programs.
  • Ensures that University catalogs accurately reflect the approved programs of study.
  • Manages the resources and capacities of the Learning Design Team to provide coordinated and supportive accompaniment to program staff and faculty to create and revise programs and courses.
  • Oversees the development and implementation of learning assessment outcomes.
  • Manages support and software for program-level assessment activities.
  • Develops a consistent approach to assessment of student learning, program review, and use of related software.
  • Collaborates with the Associate Dean for General Education and the Leader of Co-curricular Assessment on assessment data collection and reporting.
  • Coordinates course evaluation systems and program review.
  • Oversees the development and implementation of data collection and use of surveys for academic assessment and review.
  • Oversees the support for Qualtrics (SMUMN's survey platform for course evaluation).
  • Participates in the overall planning for academic functions.
  • Coordinates policy development and implementation related to curriculum and assessment.
  • Promotes effective communication surrounding curriculum and assessment activities.
  • Chairs and serves on campus committees or special projects as assigned.
  • Hires and trains staff in the department of curriculum and assessment.
Essential Skills and Abilities
  • Strong interpersonal, analytical, project management, and team skills
  • Fluency with presenting/translating technical information to non-technical staff
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear and concise reports
  • Multicultural literacy, including comfort and experience working with diverse cultures and populations
  • Data accuracy and attention to detail

Education and Experience
  • A master's degree in a related field is required; a doctoral degree is preferred
  • Expertise and experience in educational psychometrics and curricular design
  • Strategic experience in design, assessment, and evaluation at the course, program, and institutional level
  • Expertise designing complex, learning, and assessment feedback processes in digital environments at the course, department/program, and organization levels
  • Experience in "backward designing" for developmental learning outcomes
  • Specific expertise in the use of digital environments in higher education as a medium for delivering learning and assessment
  • Experience with Blackboard, Canvas, Taskstream, Portfolium, or other digital learning and assessment management systems
  • Experience in and comfort with environments involving continuous change
