Position Responsibilities
The Director of Major and Planned Giving reports directly to the Vice President for Advancement and Communication and is responsible for advancing the development, implementation, marketing and management of a major and planned giving program for Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. This individual manages the major gifts team with a focus on personally soliciting major and deferred gifts from benefactors throughout the US and other countries. Significant travel is required (estimated to be no less than 35% each year) and the cultivation and solicitation of major and planned gifts from prospective donors is the top priority. 
Management of Major Gift Team:
  • In collaboration with the Vice President for Advancement and Communication, develop and implement a successful major and planned giving program including goals, strategies, etc.
  • Manage a team of approximately six (6) Development Directors - those working directly to secure major and planned gifts for the university. 
  • Work with the development Operations Team to ensure the Major Gift Team’s systematic tracking of the development of constituent relationships- prospect identification, research and qualification, creating a strategic approach, involving the prospect, making the ask, closing the gift and stewardship.
  • In partnership with the prospect research staff, conducts prospect/portfolio reviews.
  • Accompanies Development Officers on donor visits when requested.
  • Prepares and oversees the Major Gift Team budget.
Management of Planned Giving:
  • Manage, plan and organize all aspects of the Lasallian Legacy Society, with emphasis on promoting this planned giving society so that is appropriately recognizes this important group of benefactors and attracts new membership.
  • In conjunction with the Director of Operations and Benefactor Stewardship assist in planning and coordinating the annual benefactor event ensuring all Lasallian Legacy Society members are invited to the event.
  • Work with the Operations Team to ensure the Lasallian Legacy Society honor roll of benefactors is kept current.
  • Develop/manage workshops and/or seminars related to planned giving.
  • Maintain a resource library and attend major and planned giving conferences in order to remain current on changes in tax legislation as it relates to charitable giving.
  • Orchestrate presentations for prospects, staff, and others about major and planned giving and the different vehicles available for making gifts.
  • Manage all aspects of existing charitable gift annuity agreements and trust administration in coordination with the business office.
Major Gift Portfolio:
  • Identifies, solicits and stewards gifts from new and current major gift donors with an emphasis on those who can make transformative gifts to Saint Mary’s.
  • Guides assigned prospects through all aspects of the major gift cycle.
  • Initiates contacts with potential major gift donors.
  • Develops appropriate cultivation strategies for them, including working with volunteers.
  • Moves potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure.
  • Makes solicitations to assigned prospects.
  • Appropriately stewards gifts and provides timely acknowledgment and stewardship reports to benefactors.
Capital Campaign Planning:
  • Assists the Vice President for Advancement and Communication with the planning and implementation of capital campaigns.
Essential Skills and Abilities
The ideal candidate will have the following skills and abilities:
  • Experience developing strategic vision that supports the strategic direction of the department.
  • Strong working knowledge of planned giving.
  • Travel requirement - 35%.
  • Must adhere to AFP Code of Ethical Conduct.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred
  • 5+ years’ demonstrated experience and success with personal solicitation and closing of individual gifts
