Position Responsibilities

Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota - which spans multiple locations and offers numerous programs, both online and on campus - seeks a director of web services to manage the university’s top channel of information for our audiences and the most important recruitment source of information for our prospective students. This role includes management, oversight, and direction on design, development, and content to maintain and improve a site that is fully functioning, organized, engaging and on brand.

The position reports to the Associate Vice President (AVP) for Marketing and Communication and works with IT, division and department partners, and others in Marketing and Communication. The successful candidate is a web strategist who has a good working knowledge of development, design, content, and analytics and how they are all critical to create and maintain the most effective website possible. This position will have support from other areas of the university (development, design, content) and will be an ambassador for using analytics to drive actionable improvement.  The director will also be a strong relationship builder, persuasive and communicative, and a continuous seeker of best practices. 

The position will have the opportunity to lead, at the direction of the Vice President and Associate Vice President (AVP) for Marketing and Communication, a redesign effort in 2021 that will include managing an external partner and determining a new content management system.  

Primary responsibilities of this role include managing the critical website redesign while simultaneously overseeing the current website. Specific areas of responsibility:

  • Manage the website related to content, design, organization/navigation, and metrics. Daily oversight to maintain the current site and ensure all is done with responsive design.
  • Manage the web redesign initiative and recommend the new CMS for the university (working with IT and Marketing and Communication), including oversight of the consultative committee (already engaged), and setting and marking milestones.
  • Work with Web Developer on day-to-day operations.
  • Manage external vendors, including the organization hired to partner on the web redesign, CMS provider, Siteimprove, Salesforce from web perspective, and others.
  • Project management - content improvement initiatives, data integration, interface projects, server support, etc.
  • Analytics - Google and other insights - work with others in Marketing and Communication on running reports and analyzing data.
  • Education and advocacy - Educate users and assist in development and implementation of methods and policies on standards, policies, and best practices.
Essential Skills and Abilities

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and abilities:

  • Sound technical knowledge related to managing a website including CMS management. Experience with WordPress.
  • Sound understanding and work in UX/UI And Visual Design with proficiency with web design software such as Adobe Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.)
  • Experience in web server administration; file system maintenance; file conversion techniques.
  • Analytics expertise (Google Analytics) is required with demonstrated ability in implementing web analytics and analyzing website metrics and tracking data for decision-making.
  • Understanding of digital/search engine marketing (SEM), including paid and organic search, retargeting, and inbound campaigns.
  • HTML and CSS, JavaScript experience or ability to pick up quickly (Python, Swift and C++); Working knowledge of Salesforce CRM preferred.
  • Proven track record of successful project management methods and techniques.
  • Ability to provide customer-friendly support and web services, with a record as an excellent collaborator and communicator with the ability to deliver high quality work on tight deadlines, demonstrated creativity, and attention to detail.
  • Understanding of accessibility issues (ADA and Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 508 requirements regarding the design of Web access for individuals with disabilities).

Education and Experience
  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science, web development, or an equivalent field or practical experience.
  • 5+ years with experience working in collaborative web teams and work environments, such as web development, web design, website architecture, user experience, or web-based digital communications.
  • Experience working on, preferably leading, web redesigns. 
  • Experience creating and editing web pages (HTML, CSS, PHP, SQL, and Javascript) and working with a CMS (WordPress).
  • Experience with information architecture and UX essential.
  • Success in managing vendors, people, and projects required.
