Position Responsibilities

The Instructional Design Librarian supports the Schools of Graduate and Professional Programs by enabling students, faculty, and staff to become independent researchers through transformative individual and group instruction, delivered face-to-face and online. This position collaborates with faculty to teach adult students information literacy concepts, authors print and interactive web instructional materials, delivers user-centered reference, and performs circulation and back-up interlibrary loan services.

In order to enable students and faculty to become independent researchers, this individual:

  • Delivers user-centered instruction, face-to-face and online.
  • Designs, assesses, and continuously improves instructional services, curricula, and web and print instructional materials.
  • Collaborates with faculty to integrate information literacy concepts into courses.
  • Provides user-centered and efficient reference via email, instant message, phone, and face-to-face consultations.
  • Serves as a School liaison and on campus committees.
  • Develops effective working relationships through committee, departmental, and School outreach.
  • Consults on copyright and intellectual property issues, and creates copyright documentation.
  • Identifies, evaluates, and selects electronic and print resources for the library.
  • Collects data and trains staff on areas of primary responsibility (e.g., reference, instruction, etc.)
  • Participates actively in library and university-wide meetings.
  • Delivers efficient circulation services.
  • Provides back-up interlibrary loan services as needed.
  • Stays current on instructional and reference procedures, strategies, and technologies.

  • Anticipate and assess user needs.
  • Use technology to enhance learning.
  • Learn instructional software programs, such as Camtastia, Articulate, etc.
  • Use basic computer software, such as Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Produce accurate and detailed work.
  • Work evening and weekend hours as needed.

Education and Experience
  • Master of Library Science degree from an American Library Association accredited institution or related Master's degree.
  • Teaching experience.
  • Experience with electronic library resources.
  • Experience with web authoring.


  • Information literacy teaching experience.
  • Experience assisting users with library databases, reference, and circulation inquiries, particularly in online environments.
  • Experience with Blackboard or alternative course management system.
  • Experience working in an academic library.
