Position Responsibilities

Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota seeks an Instructional Designer-Technologist to build faculty-created courses in Canvas. Working as part of the Learning Design Team, the Instructional Designer-Technologist collaborates with other team members, faculty, department chairs, program directors, and colleagues in Education Technology to develop new fully online and blended courses, and redevelop current courses transitioning to a fully online or blended modality.

  • Build, test, and proofread courses in Saint Mary’s learning management system (Canvas)
  • Apply appropriate instructional technology to enhance teaching and student learning 
  • Guide faculty on the implementation of educational technologies that support course learning objectives and content
  • Prioritize course creation activities and deliverables for multiple courses to ensure timely completion
  • Using the Learning Design Team approach, use the instructional design and development process appropriate for the given project
  • Maintain and expand technical skills and knowledge of current and emerging pedagogies for instructional design and instructional technology
  • Coordinate with faculty, program staff, and Learning Design Team members on the completion of Instructional Technology team deliverables 
  • Promote student usability, experience and access in all Learning Design Team projects
  • Assert Saint Mary’s curriculum development standards and practices
  • Maintain learning design project documentation
Essential Skills and Abilities

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:

  • Experience with and expertise in Canvas
  • Experience developing course page modules for adult learners and traditional-age students
  • Proficiency with other learning management systems and with multiple learning delivery modalities 
  • Ability to manage multiple, competing priorities and adapt to change when needed
  • Comfortable in a deadline-driven work environment
  • Experience with curriculum development processes and learning design/assessment techniques (backwards design, etc.)
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and faculty (face-to-face and virtually)
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to follow the accessibility standards in course modules and materials 
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Proficiency with Google Suite for Higher Education

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, instructional design, or related area required; Master’s degree preferred
  • Training or extensive experience in Canvas
  • 3 years of recent experience with instructional technology
  • Familiarity with and experienced in implementing UDL concepts
