Position Responsibilities

Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota is seeking a Lab and Makerspace Coordinator to provide laboratory coordination, safety and compliance, and makerspace oversight on our Winona campus. This position is responsible for oversight of laboratory operations, serving as the University Chemical Hygiene Officer overseeing laboratory safety and compliance, and managing the University’s makerspace. The Lab and Makerspace Coordinator will provide consistency in processes, inventory, ordering, and safety across these spaces. This role will work closely with staff, faculty, and administrators in science, nursing, and business to schedule labs and the makerspace and ensure spaces are set up appropriately.

While overseeing laboratory operation, the Laboratory Coordinator duties include but are not limited to: 

  • Order chemicals and equipment.
  • Manage stockroom and laboratory inventory of chemicals and equipment.
  • Prepare stock/standard solutions.
  • Prepare, setup, and take-down of laboratory experiments.
  • Troubleshoot laboratory operations.

While serving as the University Chemical Hygiene Officer, the Laboratory Coordinator is responsible for the development, administration, and monitoring of the culture of safety at Saint Mary’s University. These duties include but are not limited to:

  • Interact with campus safety consultants about chemical storage, fume hood functionality, eyewash, and safety shower function assurance.
  • Train student workers and faculty in safety procedures for Chemical Hygiene Plan and OSHA compliance.
  • Conduct an annual review of the Chemical Hygiene Plan, facilities, and procedures to ensure all practices are appropriate and contemporary.
  • Manage the waste generated in the Chemistry, Biology, Art, and Theater departments. 

While overseeing the University makerspace, the Laboratory Coordinator duties and responsibilities will include: 

  • Coordinate and manage the day-to-day operations of the makerspace which will include coordinating projects and providing support to users (staff and students) of the makerspace.
  • Ensure all equipment, including 2D/3D printers, laser cutters, and computers are maintained and utilized properly.
  • Define and monitor safety measures to ensure proper use of equipment; assist in troubleshooting equipment issues; and store all machinery and supplies in a secure manner.
  • Maintain a master schedule of planned usage by faculty and staff and ensure required materials are available.
  • Develop and maintain an inventory of equipment; work with administrators to establish budgets for new equipment and supplies.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in the physical or biological sciences required with demonstrated knowledge of chemistry. 
  • Knowledge of basic lab equipment, chemical nomenclature, chemical preparation (solutions, etc.) required.  
  • Ability to work cooperatively with the Chemistry and other department faculty, staff, and students to ensure smooth operation of weekly labs, general stockroom upkeep, and the makerspace. 
  • Experience with tools and technologies represented in a makerspace (3D printing, laser cutting, etc.) and developing training for users of equipment or technology is preferred. 
  • Experience in scheduling and coordinating space and activities preferred.
