Position Responsibilities
The Literacy Specialist and First Generation Initiative (FGI) Coordinator oversees the FGI Scholars, providing academic, social, and cultural support to first-generation students, and assisting with the academic aspect of the summer Countdown to College (C2C) program. In addition, the literacy specialist assists the Director of Learning Assistance with tutoring, literacy labs (supplemental instruction) and other support services to serve the needs of all students. 
 
  • Coach students toward setting goals for a career and life, and achieving academic success. Stay connected with students and make referrals to counseling services when necessary.
  • Assess, diagnose, and develop individual literacy development plans. Make referrals to the Learning Services when necessary and monitor progress. 
  • Collaborate with the Student Success Center when needed to connect FGI students with peer tutors, writing support, and career planning.
  • Collaborate with course instructors in meeting the unique needs of FGI students such as acquiring academic language, and culturally responsive instruction, materials, and assessment. 
  • Evaluate and guide C2C curriculum development, updating, and instruction.
  • Attend conferences, workshops, and trainings relevant to FGI and Student Success Services programs.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
Essential Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational and project management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and experience developing strong professional relationships and communicating effectively with diverse groups of people.
  • Strong computer skills: solid understanding and use of the Internet, social media, and Microsoft Office. Relational databases and CRM software experience strongly encouraged.
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends as required.
  • Familiarity with, and an appreciation of, the value of a private, liberal arts education required.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Master’s degree and/or Graduate Certificate in English as a Second Language, Reading, Literacy Studies or other related fields preferred.
  • Bilingual; Spanish preferred.
