Position Responsibilities

Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota is seeking a Masters of Social Work (MSW) Field Coordinator to work as part of the field education team to coordinate field placements.

The MSW Field Coordinator works within a community of professionals dedicated to providing relevant, rigorous, and relational experiences for adult learners. This position collaborates with social work faculty and administration to support master’s social work students in field education. Field education is the signature pedagogy of the social work profession. Saint Mary's master’s of social work students complete a minimum of 400 hours of generalist field practicum and 600 hours of clinical practicum; master's level Advanced Standing students complete a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practicum as part of the University's social work program.

The MSW Field Coordinator works with students in identifying appropriate field placements nationwide. This position is responsible for managing students' field placement site and site supervisor selection with approval from the Field Education Director. The Coordinator also advises students about the field process, supports students during the interviewing, selection, and matching process. This role also helps screen potential field sites and provides guidance to field agency staff and MSW field supervisors. 

The MSW Field Coordinator position collaborates with the Field Education Director to provide oversight to the field education component of the online Masters of Social Work program based out of our Minneapolis campus. This position will work collaboratively with the Field Education Director in identifying new field placements throughout the United States, training field supervisors and field liaisons, and providing support to field seminar instructors. This position works directly with social work students to ensure they are completing prefield tasks (prefield
calls, updating resumes, securing malpractice insurance, completing HIPAA training, etc.) and successfully securing placements with organizations that meet Saint Mary's and the Council on Social Work Education's standards for field education. The MSW Field Coordinator may have the option to teach field seminars and teach on a course-contracted basis. Some travel may be required.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Assisting the Field Education Director in the placement process, including managing and implementing the field application process.
  • Responding to student, agency, and field instructor inquiries and responding to questions about field placements.
  • Advising students on the field education process and responding to student questions about field placements.
  • Identifying and onboarding new field agencies.
  • In collaboration with other field education staff and faculty, reviewing and approving the student field applications each semester.
  • Troubleshooting with the Field Education Director, field instructors, and liaisons to address student problems that emerge at field placement sites.
  • Educating students, directors of sites, and site supervisors about field policies and expectations.
  • Maintaining student field records.
  • Managing electronic data systems related to field placements.
  • Working with the Field Education Director to manage the publication and distribution of program manuals and forms.
  • Co-coordinating student field orientations, field agency fairs, field supervisor training, and other field education office events.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Essential Skills and Abilities

Candidates should have expertise in, or a willingness to learn, the teaching of adult students. This includes a demonstrated basic proficiency and interest in educational technology such as Canvas, Panopto, and field software. The selected candidate will have the following skills and abilities:

Education and Experience

The ideal candidate will have the following credentials and experience:

  • Master of Social Work degree from a Council on Social Work Education accredited program. Only candidates with a Masters in Social Work will be considered for this position. 
  • A minimum of two years of post-MSW social work practice experience is required. Five years or more post-MSW practice experience is preferred.
  • Currently licensed to practice social work in the state of Minnesota or eligible for licensure is required.
  • Experience and comfort working with technology, and a willingness to learn new software.
  • Evidence of practice experience in the field and teaching in higher education is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accreditation standards.
  • Experience teaching and advising adult students is preferred.
  • Experience in online education and working with diverse learners is preferred.
