Position Responsibilities

Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota is seeking a Plant Maintenance Engineer to operate and maintain campus boilers and steam distribution systems, chillers, and chilled water distribution system, and building management systems on our Winona campus. This position will also operate and maintain the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in all college facilities. This is a swing shift position rotating between first and second shift in two-week intervals during the school year and working primarily first shift during the summer. This position will also require a Saturday rotation every five weeks and be on call as needed. 

  • Install, maintain, and repair HVAC and associated plumbing and electrical systems; install, maintain and repair motors, fans, duct work, compressors, actuators, piping, valves, and controlling equipment to ensure safety and comfort of facility users; conduct ongoing monitoring of facility HVAC operation
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance to inspect, clean, repair and replace belts, bearings, chains, seals, clutches, pulleys and mounts on fans, pumps, motors and other equipment on campus.  Maintain inventory of belts, grease, oil and supplies, maintains records of all repair, maintenance and replacement of equipment and building supplies, maintain and manage environmental conditions via HVAC control system
  • Perform daily rounds of boiler room equipment throughout the campus, as needed
  • Perform water testing, chemical adjustments, and routine, preventative, or required maintenance on boilers, radiation controls, steam traps, pool, cooling tower and related heating equipment and systems
  • Install, repair, and maintain water piping systems to HVAC equipment: maintain vent piping and controlling equipment
  • Inspect and maintain air conditioning units throughout the campus, cleaning coils, changing filters, adjusting/changing belts, and providing lubrication as needed.  Maintain system components related to pumps, pneumatic and electrical controls, assuring proper circulation and ventilation; monitor and maintain air conditioning systems and units; assure proper settings for ventilation and maintaining comfortable air conditioned temperatures; maintain and repair thermostats and compressor
  • Perform generator switch-over test as needed
  • Perform other fill-in duties on a seasonal basis or as workloads require
Essential Skills and Abilities

The ideal candidate must:

  • Be able to troubleshoot mechanical problems and perform repairs that are consistent with licensing requirements and industry best practices
  • Observe all safety guidelines and follow work procedures established by the university and the appropriate licensing division of the state of Minnesota
  • Be able to lift heavy equipment and tools, as well as bend, crouch, crawl, climb into spaces where equipment is located
  • Demonstrate professional interaction with students, faculty, and staff
  • Be able to perform routine maintenance and determine when and what kind of maintenance is needed on equipment
  • Have the ability to use multi-meters to read voltage, current and resistance values, and troubleshoot basic circuits
  • Be able to read and understand mechanical drawings
  • Have mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity with work-related hand and power tools
  • Be willing to work a swing shift, weekends, and be on call

Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Gas-Piping City of Winona license preferred
  • Minnesota Operating Engineer, 1st class C, license preferred
