Position Responsibilities

The Prior Learning Assessment Coordinator oversees a student-centered process to evaluate and assign college-level credit for prior learning experience that is consistent with the rigor, values, and practices of a Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota undergraduate education. The PLA Coordinator is a .25 FTE, year round position.

  • Works with Academic Affairs to maintain updated print and digital media regarding the undergraduate PLA process, policies, and resources
  • Serves as the contact person for prior learning assessment
    • provides clear information about the value and approach to PLA throughout the institution,
    • advises students on PLA requirements and process, and
    • distinguishes PLA as separate from general education and other undergraduate requirements. 
  • Identifies PLA raters and submits them to be qualified in the course content they are evaluating
    • creates and conducts PLA rater training, with regular meetings for raters;
    • convenes a PLA advisory committee;
    • outlines data tracking for PLA usage, credits awarded, raters, etc. for semester reporting by collaborating with current data collection specialists and systems;
    • works with lead COM325 faculty and the Learning Design Team on the online PLA course; and
    • recommends changes to the PLA process based on program review, ongoing data, and advisory committee, rater, and student feedback

Education and Experience
  • Undergraduate degree in a related education or counseling field required
  • Experience working with adult learners and knowledge of the fundamental principles of adult education required
  • Prior learning assessment and college administration experience preferred
  • Three years’ relevant guidance or academic advising work experience preferred
  • Experience working with and assessing student learning outcomes, preferably in a higher education setting
  • Competent in using applications in Google Suite
  • Experience working in online learning formats
