Position Responsibilities
The Public Relations Specialist implements, evaluates and refines a comprehensive public relations strategy for the university that advances and achieves key institutional goals and promotes the Lasallian Catholic heritage of the university. Reporting to the associate vice president for marketing and communication, the role collaborates with key internal and external constituents to develop and implement professional, creative, and measurable public and media relations, and community engagement events and activities.
 
The Public Relations Specialist plans, implements, and monitors:
  • Public Relations, including event and initiative sponsorships, and community engagement/liaison
  • Social Media, including managing social media presence, and creating and distributing content across channels
  • Media Relations
  • Engagement and marketing event planning and coordination
  • Photography needs on the Winona Campus
In addition, the public relations specialist will provide backup and assistance for internal and external crisis communications.
Essential Skills and Abilities
The successful candidate will have the following skills and abilities:
  • Outstanding project management skills
  • Excellent writing skills; innovative approach and creative execution
  • Comfort speaking publicly and working with Twin Cities and Winona media
  • Basic photography skills
  The successful candidate must support, respect, and advance the mission of Saint Mary's University as a Lasallian Catholic institution.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations or similar degree is required; master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience and expertise in marketing, media relations, public affairs, crisis communications, issues management, social media, and public relations.
  • Experience coaching senior leadership in messaging and interviewing.
  • Related work experience in higher education, policy, and advocacy.
  • Experience with the creative and strategic application of digital and social media technologies.
  • Understanding of and commitment to Lasallian core values and Catholic higher education.
