Position Responsibilities
The Student Success Adviser for First Generation Initiative (FGI) & Countdown to College (C2C) directly and programmatically provides assistance to a diverse body of undergraduate students striving to reach their academic and career goals. Situated within the Student Success Center, this position develops and provides undergraduate student planning services that supports an inclusive and equitable social and learning environment for all undergraduate students. Such planning services will use diverse learning methods so all undergraduate students can meet the University’s academic requirements. The position will build respect for inclusion of diverse populations of undergraduate students from all races, ethnicities, genders, religions, sexual orientations, ages, and abilities an integral part of academic excellence. 
  • Collaborate with the academic advising team in developing advising materials, workshops, and programs for all students, including first-generation students, undecided students, transfer students, and students at risk.
  • Coach students toward setting goals for a career and life, and achieving academic success to increase the retention and matriculation of all students, with special attention to students from underrepresented populations. Advise students about academic and graduation requirements, departmental, collegiate, and University policies and procedures, and selection and registration of courses.
  • Evaluate transcripts and research course descriptions to determine transferability of credits; and review and interpret placement and other standardized test scores. Provide assistance in academic advising sessions and registration, including advising / registering students.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of academic adviser training and materials, workshops, presentations, fairs, NSOR, and events.
  • Enhance and/or develop collaborative academic programs and opportunities with faculty, staff, and students that contribute to the education of each student’s cultural perspective.
  • Assist in the implementation of leadership development, cultural enrichment, academic and socio-emotional programs for students.
  • Support initiatives for academic support, assist with developing an academic action plan for students on academic probation and experiencing academic difficulties or dismissal/transfer from the university.  Track, monitor and report students’ progress.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to promote the Student Success Center as a place for promoting diversity and cross-cultural understanding.
  • Assist the FGI and C2C Coordinators with programming.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Knowledge of current practices in student, career, and learning development and student database management.
  • Knowledge of issues that specifically impact the retention and matriculation of students from underrepresented populations.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate on issues of campus climate with external and internal offices and stakeholders; and ability to communicate with diverse faculty, staff, students, and community members. 
  • Demonstrated commitment and success to an inclusive learning environment.
