Position Responsibilities

With a web redesign underway and a focus on improving our top channel of communication, 
Saint Mary’s is looking for a web designer / front end developer to join the web services team in our marketing and communication department. This high-impact position will contribute to large, university-wide projects, aid in our primary website redesign process, improve a number of WordPress sites operated by the University, and contribute to the day-to-day management of our web properties and related applications. 

Primary duties include conceptualizing and implementing creative ideas for university websites, working with internal clients to implement design / content changes and helping to maintain a number of WordPress based websites.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Conceptualize creative ideas for internal partners for their web pages and sites (faculty, departments and students around the university).
  • Make content and design updates to current websites.
  • Test and improve the design of the website.
  • Work with the marketing and communication team to create design guidelines, standards, and best practices.
  • Maintain the appearance of websites. 
  • Design visual imagery for websites and ensure they are in line with branding.
  • Work with WordPress plugins and themes to create websites.
  • Communicate design ideas using user flows, process flows, site maps, and wireframes.
  • Incorporate functionalities and features into websites.
Essential Skills and Abilities

The selected candidate will have the following skills and abilities: 

  • Excellent visual design skills and understanding of best practices for UI / UX.
  • Ability to translate mockups and written requests into visually appealing designs.
  • Adaptable and willing to learn new techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • The ability to quickly learn new software.

Education and Experience

Required Experience:

  • 1-3 years relevant experience developing/designing sites using WordPress.
  • Experience implementing visually appealing web designs for others using a variety of page builders such as Divi, Gutenberg, Avada etc.
  • Good understanding of search engine optimization principles.
  • Designing for and troubleshooting mobile responsive designs.

Preferred Experience: 

  • Degree in relevant field.
  • Proficiency in HTML, CSS JQuery and JavaScript.
  • Familiarity with PHP and MYSQL.
