On April 7, two School of Education organizations, Kappa Delta Pi and ASCD, hosted a teacher panel made up of eight first-year teachers who graduated last year. The panel described rewards and challenges in the first year of teaching, advice for aspiring teachers, and funny moments from the classroom. Campus Connection Students and faculty attend computing symposium

James Loken, a senior computer data science: GIS major, demonstrated his programming project at the 2019 Midwest Instruction and Computing Symposium (MICS) held April 5 and 6 on the campus of North Dakota State University in Fargo, N.D. The project involved developing software to wirelessly control an old scoreboard through a web interface. The scoreboard had been updated to include a Raspberry Pi computer and LED lighting. As the Cardinal men’s baseball team entered their new clubhouse for the first time, selfies were taken; high-fives were given; and exclamations of excitement filled the air. A special ribbon-cutting ceremony was held in January, as Saint Mary’s unveiled its new $704,000 baseball clubhouse to the team for the first time. Campus Connection Student-led campaign promotes community through handwritten letters

A student group ran a month-long letter writing campaign to promote positive vibes on campus. Now in its second year, Spread the Love was created with the idea of building community and expressing gratitude and appreciation for others on campus. Portia Mensah ’19 spent a semester working alongside teens in an urban school in the Twin Cities and literally walked in the footsteps of a homeless person. With great anticipation, Saint Mary’s launched a new 3+2 Physician Assistant (PA) Program. It is a collaborative effort between Saint Mary’s and Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences. Beginning in fall 2019, students chosen for this highly competitive program will spend three years studying on the Winona Campus followed by two years with Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences, with most graduate courses being held at Saint Mary’s Cascade Meadow facility in Rochester. Students majoring in biology, environmental biology, and psychology presented their undergraduate research at the Seven Rivers Undergraduate Research Symposium, sponsored by Viterbo University on Nov. 9. Seven Saint Mary’s students and staff attended the Kente Summit at Macalester College in St. Paul on Nov. 2-3. Students of all majors gathered late September to attend a Business Mixer event, followed by a presentation on the Saint Mary’s data analytics program. The event was co-hosted by the Business Department and the Kabara Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies at Saint Mary’s University and co-sponsored by Miller Ingenuity, WinCraft, and RTP Company.
