Cardinal Update

As we navigate the evolving landscape of higher education, we must address the financial challenges facing institutions like ours — including shifting enrollment trends, rising operational costs, and increased competition.

To review our critical 2026 budget goals and ensure the long-term sustainability of Saint Mary’s University, we invite you to attend one of the upcoming in-person Cardinal Update Live small-group sessions on Tuesday, April 8 in Minneapolis (University Center) at 8 a.m. and Winona (Aquinas 200) at 12:30 p.m. or 2 p.m. Michelle Rovang, Vice President for Marketing and Communication, and Andy Dirksen, Chief Operating Officer, will lead these sessions.

During these meetings, we will reflect on key takeaways from last fall’s zero-based budgeting process, which helped identify essential priorities and potential reductions. Discussions will also focus on the importance of stewardship, cost alignment, and revenue expansion. As we pursue financial stability and strategic growth, we must continue evolving our program portfolio to align with student and workforce needs. This requires thoughtful resource management, innovative program development, and mission-driven decision-making.

The sessions will also include:

  • A high-level overview of the university’s financial position, presented by David Ansell, AVP for Finance.
  • Updates on the sale of Brother Louis Hall.
  • Details on upcoming transitions at our Minneapolis Campus.
  • A discussion on current and future operational needs.

We understand that not everyone can attend in person. Afterward, a summary of the sessions and opportunities for further discussion will be shared.
