Bill Hendrickson
Bill Hendrickson, who received his bachelor’s degree from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota in 1939, established the Hendrickson Institute for Ethical Leadership.
He became chairman of St. Jude Medical, Inc. and was its first chairman emeritus. Dr. Hendrickson often commented that he was fortunate throughout his career to work with and observe ethical leaders who recognized the importance of developing high moral standards.
He and his wife, Jean, founded the institute to encourage, develop, and affirm creative leadership and to provide moral, ethical, globally oriented leaders for all facets of society.
Leadership programs
Hendrickson Forum
Each spring, the Hendrickson Forum features a keynote address from an internationally recognized expert in ethical leadership or one with significant ethical leadership experience. At each forum, we present the Hendrickson Medal to a Minnesota-based leader who exemplifies the values associated with ethical leadership.
Leadership and ethics speakers and events
- Speakers who reflect on leadership from their own personal and professional perspectives on business, politics, religion, and other relevant topics.
- Panel discussions addressing timely topics or ongoing areas of ethical and character development. Panelists include faculty and staff of the university and other local leaders.
- Colloquia on a particular topic, facilitated either by a moderator experienced in the area, or by a student leader
Leadership badges
The Hendrickson Institute facilitates three microcredentialing programs to mentor students as future leaders.

Ethical Leadership
Focuses on core factors of ethical leadership and personal integrity: good character, habits, and decision-making. Students apply these to intercultural competence and collaboration.

Catholic Business Leader
Integrates ethical leadership with Catholic faith and morals. Students cultivate skills in respectful communication and leveraging technology virtuously within a business context.

Catholic Entrepreneur
Integrates Catholic social teaching with entrepreneurial practices, guiding the project management process from initial prototype ideation to a compelling business proposal.
