Endorsements and Additional Licensure

If you are looking for endorsements, additional credentials, or are hoping to expand the scope of your license, Saint Mary's University of Minnesota has an option for you.

We can help if any of the following situations apply to you:

  • You are currently licensed as an elementary or secondary teacher who would like to add a 5–8 endorsement in Math, Science, Social Studies, Communication Arts and Literature, or a K–8 in World Languages
  • You are currently licensed and would like to add an additional field to your credentials such as K–12 Reading, Special Education, or ESL
  • You are currently licensed in a field where you would like to expand the scope of your license
  • You are licensed in another state and would like to become licensed in Minnesota

Endorsements

Fully licensed teachers can earn special endorsement licenses in Communications Arts and Literature, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and World Language from Saint Mary’s. Educators who are prepared for special endorsement licenses will gain valuable knowledge for teaching a certain content area. We will review your educational preparation. In addition to other educational coursework you may need you will be required to complete a methods course, a supervised field experience, and the content specific MTLE examinations.

We work with fully licensed teachers who are adding grade 5–8 endorsement licenses in Communication Arts and Literature. This license requires you to have the equivalent of a minor in English, and it includes coursework in writing (advanced essay and research writing), grammar, American literature, media communications, literary analysis, and adolescent literature.

We work with fully licensed teachers who are adding grade 5–8 endorsement licenses in Mathematics. This license requires you to have the equivalent of a minor in math, and it includes coursework in college geometry, calculus, statistics, and discrete math.

This license requires you to have the equivalent of a minor in science, and it includes coursework in botany and zoology (2 levels), chemistry (2 levels), physics (2 levels), calculus, statistics, and geology and astronomy.

We work with fully licensed teachers who are adding grade 5–8 endorsement licenses in World Language (Spanish). This license requires you to have taken at least 21 credits in Spanish plus the prescribed education courses. All students seeking K–8 licensure in World Languages must demonstrate an intermediate to high proficiency level in all four skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) as outlined in the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines, and successfully complete the following language courses, plus two or three additional courses.

Admissions Process for Nondegree-seeking Applicants

After a preliminary phone conversation and your application to the program, we will review your educational preparation. In order to determine exactly which courses you need to complete, we ask that you go through a streamlined admissions process (see below). After that, we will conduct a detailed transcript analysis to determine which content and pedagogy requirements you have already met and which ones you still need.

Please follow the standard application procedure for the M.A. in Instruction (Note: You will have the option to indicate you are nondegree-seeking). Submit the $25 application fee, and be prepared to provide the additional application materials required. This includes:

  • Current résumé
  • Personal statement outlining current licensure and licensure(s) you are seeking
  • Official transcripts from any institution other than Saint Mary’s
