Fighting sexual harassmentThe list of high-profile men — in media, in sports, in entertainment, and in politics — who are being fired due to inappropriate sexual behavior continues to grow longer. Susan Strauss D’07, for one, isn’t surprised. “I guess what surprises me is that finally it’s all erupting; there are women coming forward to proclaim what they’ve experienced for years, but they had never felt safe in coming forward before,” she said. “But does it surprise me that these men are guilty of it? No, not in the least.” Although the “#Me Too” movement is empowering women to come forward, Dr. Strauss — a national and international speaker, trainer, consultant, investigator, and an expert witness for harassment and bullying lawsuits — said the focus needs to be on how we create a culture where women are respected and no longer subjected to this harassment. Alumna Dr. Deb Henton named Superintendent of the YearThere’s no question what inspires Deb Henton M’95, C’96, D’99, superintendent of North Branch Area Public Schools. Actually, there are approximately 3,000 inspirations. Her students. “Whenever I can raise student achievement, that’s No. 1,” Dr. Henton said. “That’s why I come to work every day. I want to create an environment where kids have the best opportunities possible to achieve their dreams." A business leader and global entrepreneur, Pablo Gaito serves as the vice president for global talent management and organization effectiveness at Gap Inc. A native of Argentina, Gaito received his Master of Arts in Human Development from Saint Mary’s, which years ago helped him launch his career as an executive.
Kathy Wilde, R.N., who received her M.A. in Health and Human Services Administration from Saint Mary’s, exemplifies leadership excellence in the healthcare field. As chief nursing officer and vice president for professional and support services for Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC), Kathy brings vision, passion, and broad experience in operational leadership, performance improvement, patient- and family-centered care, and nursing professional practice to her work each and every day.
As fire chief of the Saint Paul Fire Department, Tim Butler is in charge of the operations and administration of the 475-person fire department. He has been recognized for his commitment to safety programs and training—he helped design a tuition-free program for low-income and minority residents that helps them attain CPR and first-responder certification and become eligible for EMT certification and college credit. A graduate of Saint Mary’s, he received his M.A. in Public Safety Administration and now serves as an adjunct professor.
