The Arts Thrive at Saint Mary’s
The arts come alive at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. Whether you are a student participating in the arts or an audience member, we’re all about opportunities—to grow, enjoy, and appreciate the arts.
Our vibrant Winona Campus is a hub of artistic activity, bringing together students with common interests and engaging with the greater community. Whether you are a student wishing to pursue a career in the visual or performing arts, take part in the arts as a hobby, or enjoy the arts as a spectator, Saint Mary's has an opportunity for you. Choose from our programming or community arts activities, and get involved in the arts at Saint Mary's.
Performing Arts Academic Programs
Saint Mary's offers academic programming for students interested in the performing arts, including theatre, dance, and music. Non-majors are welcome to participate in student performances and productions, and community members are welcome to attend.
Break a leg. Take a bow. Put your hands together. Saint Mary’s Theatre and Dance Department stages full‐scale productions involving talented students of all majors each year.
For students wishing to study as well as perform, Saint Mary's offers academic programming including a theatre major and minor, and a dance minor. Scholarships are available to theatre majors.
Qualified theatre majors impress audiences in London each year through the Stefannié Valéncia Kierlin London Theatre Program. Students spend a semester abroad where they take classes, attend performing arts events in England, travel, study, and perform a four-night run of an American play at the Wimbledon Studio Theatre in London, making Saint Mary’s likely the only U.S. college or university to fully mount a production in London each year. Students also participate in an exclusive two-week intensive workshop where they study and perform a public showcase at Dublin’s renowned Gaiety School of Acting.
The Saint Mary’s Music Department offers many opportunities for all students to get involved in music through our ensembles: Chamber Singers, Chamber Orchestra, Concert Band, Concert Choir, Jazz combos, Jazz Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, or Wind Ensemble. Saint Mary's offers a music major and minor; music industry major; music performance major; and music education majors in instrumental and vocal. Music students have the opportunity to tour nationally and internationally.
Ensemble performances, as well as theatre and dance productions, are open to students and the public to attend. The Department of Theatre and Dance wows Winona‐area audiences with every show, and music lovers can choose from cool jazz, memorable melodies, or the classics as played by our various ensembles. Special student pricing is available for all events, and free student rush tickets are often available for Saint Mary's Arts events.
Tickets are available from the Saint Mary’s Performance Center Box Office, 507‐457‐1715 or online.
Visual Arts Academic Programs
Students interested in studying visual arts and design benefit from our academic programming. Students work in a creative environment and have unique opportunities to travel and abundant opportunities to display public work.
The Art and Design Department at Saint Mary’s offers majors in art studio and digital graphic design as well as an art minor. Talented faculty members work closely with students to diversify their talents and enrich their cultural awareness. Two galleries on the Winona Campus display student art from various disciplines, including graphic arts, sculpture, painting, printmaking, and photography.
Abstract. Realist. Impressionist. Contemporary. At Saint Mary’s, visual art is created, displayed, and admired. The Lillian Davis Hogan Galleries, located in the Toner Student Center, are free and open to the public daily. A student gallery is also located in Saint Joseph’s Hall (the art and design building). Exhibitors include students; local, regional, and national artisans; and faculty members.
Community Arts Opportunities
Students and Winona community members have many opportunities to enjoy the arts while taking classes at the Minnesota Conservatory of the Arts or enjoying performances from touring productions through the Page Series. Saint Mary's also hosts outside events and supports many initiatives such as the Minnesota Beethoven Festival each summer.
Tap. Ballet. Irish Dance. Theatre. Painting. Music. And more. The Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts (MCA), a Saint Mary’s affiliate, offers community programming in multiple areas of the arts. Whether you’re interested in classes, workshops, or private lessons and instruction—regardless of your age—you’ll find an encouraging place to grow artistically. MCA is located in the Valéncia Arts Center, two miles from our main campus and adjacent to Cotter High School.
Toe-tapping. Sidesplitting. Inspirational. Unforgettable. The Page Series brings the world’s artists to our Winona stage. Through the Page Series, Saint Mary’s brings community audiences and professional performing artists together through performances of music, theatre, comedy, dance, and youth programming, as well as free educational events throughout the year. The season’s offerings highlight myriad cultures—from the United States, Canada, Ireland, China, and India. Local and regional visual artists are also featured throughout the year in the Performance Center's Ben Miller Lobby.
