Biology Pre-Medical Imaging Major

Do you want to work with patients affected by heart disease, create X-rays for physicians to determine broken bones, or use an ultrasound to construct an image of vital organs? We’ll prepare you to pursue a career as a competent, trained, and highly skilled medical imaging professional. See the difference at Saint Mary’s.

As a pre-medical imaging major with an emphasis in either echocardiography, radiography, or sonography — coupled with a 21-month internship at Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences — you’ll develop the knowledge and skills to perform high-demand diagnostic imaging procedures.

The biology pre-radiography major is affiliated with and prepares you for the certification exam given by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (AART)

Affiliated with the sonography training program at Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences.
Upon completion of a sonography training program, you’re eligible to take the certification exam administered by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).

There is a growing demand for imaging technologists, with numerous career options and strong salaries. Jobs for sonographers are expected to grow 14% from 2020-30, faster than the average for all occupations. In May 2020, the median annual salary for a sonographer was $70,380,1 while radiologic technologists earned $53,710.2

What are some of the admission requirements?

The number of students admitted each year is limited. Admission decisions are based on the applicant’s ability to meet the expectations for academic performance outlined in the Program Handbook. Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not ensure admission to the program. Applicants must have completed an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited institution and maintained an overall GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale. Applicants must demonstrate the language proficiency necessary for successful graduate coursework.
