Scholarships Available to New Incoming Winona Campus Students

At Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, there are many scholarships available to first-year and transfer students to reward academic success, achievements, talents, community contributions, and demonstrated leadership.

Scholarships awarded by the university do not have to be repaid. Scholarships are renewable for three years, provided satisfactory academic progress is maintained. Your admission counselor can help determine your eligibility.

We encourage applicants to submit their FAFSA as soon as possible after October 1.  To enable the Financial Aid Office to process your FAFSA and meet the deadline to mail your financial aid package, please have your FAFSA submitted two weeks prior to the FA Awards Mailed deadline listed below. Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota’s Federal School Code is: 002380.  As long as we have received all the necessary forms, we should be able to send you a complete package according to which admission application type you applied as.

Rolling Admission

Beginning Jan. 1, we move to rolling admission. There are lots of scholarships and financial awards available for first-time freshmen at Saint Mary's University of Minnesota.

Students who submit and complete their admission file after January 1, will be reviewed and receive an admit decision 1-2 weeks after submitting their admission file.

Cardinal Visit Scholarship

Up to $4000

A renewable, $1,000 per year, scholarship, awarded to incoming first-year students who make an official campus visit during their senior year of high school and are admitted to Saint Mary's.

An official visit is one scheduled online or with the admission office, a coach, or another official representative of Saint Mary’s. In addition to visiting campus, an eligible student must be admitted and enroll full time.

A student must maintain full-time status to continue receiving the Cardinal Visit Scholarship

2020-21 Merit Scholarships

Generous merit scholarships are awarded to first-year and transfer students. Criteria include a student's academic performance; school, church, and community activities; and recommendations.

Each scholarship is renewable for three additional years based on successful maintenance of the required GPA. Scholarships are awarded at full amount for full-time, residential (R) students only. Commuter (C) students will have a $4,000 reduction in their scholarship.

Additional Scholarships for First-Year and Transfer Students

Saint Mary’s offers first-year and transfer students a number of scholarships to nurture creativity and artistic talent.

$1,000 Per Academic Year

Saint Mary’s automatically awards this to family members of Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota or College of Saint Teresa graduates who are parents, siblings, or grandparents of applicants only. Students must indicate this relationship in their application as this is awarded only at the time of admission.

$1,000 Per Academic Year

Awarded automatically to graduates of Catholic high schools.

Up to $2,000 per academic year

Non-Minnesota residents are eligible for this award.

$2,500 Per Academic Year

The PTK Scholarship rewards the accomplishments of members of Phi Theta Kappa in good standing at their current institution by providing financial support to high-achieving community college students to pursue their bachelor’s degree. A transfer cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 at the point of admission is required. If this requirement is met, this scholarship is awarded at the point of admission.

$1,500 Per Academic Year

The Transfer Community College Scholarship rewards the accomplishments of graduates of community and technical colleges by providing financial support to high-achieving students to pursue their bachelor's degree at Saint Mary's. A minimum of 30 credit hours of accepted college transfer credits beyond high school graduation is required. If this requirement is met, this scholarship is awarded at the point of admission.

Talent Scholarships

Saint Mary’s offers scholarships for art, music, and theatre to incoming first-year and transfer students. These awards are competitive and require supporting materials. Please contact the respective academic department for more information.

Private External Scholarships

Many organizations offer an array of grants and scholarships. Check with your parents’ employers, your place of worship, your community service organizations, and your high school counselors to find all the potential opportunities available.

Students receiving outside scholarships must contact the Saint Mary’s Financial Aid Office immediately upon notification of the scholarship award. Outside scholarships will be credited to the student’s tuition account after the student has completed all procedures requested by the outside agency and Saint Mary’s has received the funds.
