Saint Mary’s University will celebrate our 2024 graduates in the Schools of Graduate and Professional Programs on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis.

Graduation
Graduation is applying for a degree through the Graduation Application, completing your degree audit, getting your degree conferred, and receiving your diploma.
This is a required process
Applying for a degree does not sign you up to attend commencement.
Commencement
Commencement is the ritual conferring of degrees through a ceremony with your classmates and guests.
Participating in commencement is optional.
You must confirm your interest in attending the ceremony on the Graduation Application.
Commencement Livestream & Recording
Our live stream will begin approximately 30 minutes prior to the Commencement ceremony on our YouTube channel.
A recording of the event will also be available on Youtube.

Photos
There will be an opportunity for families, friends, and faculty to take photos after the event outside of the main hall at Orchestra Hall. Individual graduate photos will be taken at the event by a professional photographer. Information on purchasing these photos will be sent to the graduates email address approximately one month after the ceremony.

Congratulations on nearing the completion of your academic program at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota! Before you can walk in the commencement ceremony and receive your diploma, it’s important to ensure that you have met all the necessary academic requirements. Below are the key steps to follow:
If you are not sure if you are ready for graduation, please contact your program director or your advisor.
Did you complete all your courses?
- Make sure you have successfully completed all the required courses for your program as outlined in the curriculum. This includes both major-specific courses and any general education requirements.
Do you meet the credit requirements?
- Verify that you have earned the required number of credits as specified by your program.
Are you in good academic standing?
- Ensure that you have maintained the minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) required for your program. Your GPA is a reflection of your academic performance throughout your time at Saint Mary’s University.
- Bachelor Completion students are in good academic standing when the student’s minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) is 2.0 or higher.
- A graduate student is in good academic standing when the student’s minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) is 3.0 or higher.
- Undergo a final degree audit conducted by the registrar’s office to ensure that all graduation requirements have been met. This audit will review your academic records and confirm your eligibility for graduation.

We would like to inform you that Saint Mary’s University has partnered with Jostens for the procurement and delivery of your graduation diplomas. As part of this partnership, Jostens will be responsible for processing diploma orders and providing tracking information for your convenience.
Here’s what you need to know:
Diploma needs to be paid in full
- Payment for the diploma must be completed in full before the order can be processed. Failure to settle any outstanding balance on your account will result in the diploma not being ordered.
The Diploma:
Diplomas and certificates are printed and will be mailed to your diploma delivery address about four to six weeks after graduation.
- Diplomas are 8.5″ by 11″ except for Doctoral diplomas
- Doctoral diplomas are 14″ by 11″
Diploma Ordering Process:
- Upon graduation, SMU will initiate the diploma ordering process with Jostens on your behalf.
- Your print diploma will be mailed to the address you provided on your Graduation Application and will take about four to six weeks after graduation.
- You will be notified via email once your diploma has been ordered.
Tracking Information:
- Jostens will provide tracking details to your email for your diploma shipment once it has been processed and shipped.

Financial Information
As you start to think about the completion of your current program, please review your financial account on The Nest. If you have any questions regarding your bill, our Student Central team can assist via phone at 612-238-4566 or email at studentcentral@smumn.edu.
If there is an outstanding balance on your account, we will not order your diploma and cannot release your diploma to you until your balance is paid. Transcripts may be held if your account is not current.
An unpaid balance will not impact your ability to participate in the commencement ceremony.
Please note that failure to return any borrowed materials from the library or bookstore may incur a charge on your account.

Doctoral students have the option to rent regalia from SMUMN ($100) or purchase regalia to keep from Jostens (approximately $700).
- Students who complete their program requirements during the Summer Terms (May-August) or Fall Terms (September-December) traditionally participate in the January Commencement Ceremony. Students must complete a Commencement Application by November 1 to participate in the ceremony.

- Degrees are not distributed at commencement ceremonies. Not attending commencement does not impact your ability to receive your degree. - Reach out to tcregistrar@smumn.edu to update your residence address – your diploma and any future communications from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota will be sent to this address!
- Update your Email
- Making sure your personal email is updated in our record will allow you to receive accurate and up to date information in a timely manner!
- Update your Address
Be sure you export any important documentation from The Nest, as well as your SMUMN email address. Your student portal account access will remain active for 90 days after you graduate to allow access to your record in order to obtain the 1098-T tax form as well as a copy of your unofficial transcript.
All transcript requests are now made online using the National Student Clearinghouse. Please note, at this time we do not have any way to order an unofficial transcript, so please be sure to download a copy for your records after graduation, as your access to the Nest will only last 90 days after you graduate
Current students and alumni may request transcripts through the National Student Clearinghouse, a secure and confidential website. Transcripts can be sent directly to you or a third party by US mail or electronically. Each transcript is $5.00, payable by credit or debit card. Additional features of online ordering include order tracking, updates, and transcript request history.
Note: students must enter Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, instead of just St. Mary’s University when filling out the Clearinghouse form.
