School of Education

If you’re a teacher or in the education field, have a master’s degree, and want to advance your career, you should consider an education specialist (Ed.S.) degree. This advanced certificate is between a master’s degree and a doctorate and may help you gain new skills without needing to invest as much time or money as a doctoral degree.

Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota offers online programs through our Minneapolis and Rochester campuses. Here, our staff discusses our remote Ed.S. program, how long it takes to complete, and answers other frequently asked questions.

Earn a Degree in Less Time at SMUMN

At Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, we keep flexibility and affordability at the forefront. We want our adult learners to expand their knowledge while being able to maintain their normal routine. Our online programs provide busy adults the opportunity to reach their goals anywhere they can access the internet.

We offer an accelerated Ed.S. program option that allows you to earn your degree in about one year. However, the average completion time for this program is around two years. You’ll need an additional two years to earn your license.

SMUMN’s Education Specialist Degree Program

Our Ed.S. in Educational Administration program is a 36-credit program that combines synchronous class meetings with flexible online class work. You’ll meet with your instructor and classmates during scheduled times, allowing you to benefit from real-time discussion. You can ask questions and get clarification on topics you don’t understand during these online meetings.

Additionally, you can complete outside coursework and studies on your own time. We use this remote setup so our students can continue working and enjoy spending time with their families and hobbies while furthering their education.

Program Outline

Our hope is that students become experts in their field, and moral and ethical leaders in their schools and communities. Our Ed.S. degree is a fusion of an administrative license certificate and six credits of specialized coursework. This program is a part of our School of Education and uses practical studies and hands-on experience to help you expand your knowledge and set you up for success.

Our instructors are experienced administrators and experts in the field of education, so you’ll receive an education from those who know what training and skills you need to be successful. We rooted this program in leadership theory and principles, administration skills, and new teaching methodologies to help you become a subject matter expert in your chosen area.
