MCA Holiday Top Jam goes virtual Dec. 18; all tap dancers invited to pre-register

December 9, 2020

Press releases

Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts (MCA) invites tap dancers of all ages to its annual Holiday Tap Jam. Due to COVID-19, this year’s performance will be virtual. Tap dance students, ages 5 and older, are invited to participate in this fun-filled event. Holiday Tap Jam is free and open to tappers everywhere. Levels accommodate a variety of experience levels, from beginners to advanced tappers.

Participants will be given access to a video to learn a short tap warm-up and combination at their convenience the week prior to the main event, to be presented via Zoom on Friday, Dec. 18. Each participating student also will receive a small goody bag to enhance the Zoom session. Bags are accessible for pick up only in Winona, and a list of items will be given to non-local students.

Live Zoom celebrations will include games, sharing, and conversation. For the live online sessions, students will just need a small space on which it is safe to tap (such as a tap board), tap shoes, and a Wi-Fi enabled device. Via Zoom, students will be able to interact with the instructor and other students. Students and families also may choose to not share their images on camera. Performances on Friday, Dec. 18, are:

Tap for Kids, ages 5-7, 4:15-4:45 p.m.

Tap I, ages 8 and older, with less than three years of experience, 5-5:30 p.m.

Tap II and II-III, ages 10 and older, and/or with three-five years tap experience, 5:45-6:30 p.m.

Tap III, IV, and V, ages 12 and older, and/or with five years of tap experience, 6:45-7:45 p.m.

Instructors: Carter Full, Nathan Graff, Christine Martin, and Justine Meinke

MCA will accept free will donations for the event. Tap boards are available for rent and purchase. Tap shoe rental is available for free, through a tap shoe lending program. Contact the MCA office for more information at mca@smumn.edu.
