Arts Co-Curricular UG Press releases

Join Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota to experience “Music in Bloom,” an afternoon of music on April 11 at the Performance Center on Saint Mary’s University’s Winona Campus.

The afternoon begins at 3 p.m. in the Page Theatre with a classical concert featuring works by an array of composers including Vivaldi, Rachmaninoff, Händel, and Grieg. Under the direction of Dr. Zoraida Oyola Rebaza, director of music programming, the wind ensemble and choir will bring to life a repertoire that combines popular masterpieces with hidden gems. Excerpts from “Fireworks” and “The Four Seasons” will be performed by the wind ensemble. The choir’s multilingual program includes “Ubi Caritas,” “Bogoroditse Devo,” and “Go song of mine.” Each piece of the program has a unique story to tell reflecting the beauty of music across centuries.

Following the wind ensemble and choir concert, the audience is invited to enjoy an intermission with light refreshments in the Page Theatre Ben Miller Lobby at 4 p.m.

At 4:30 p.m., the string ensemble will take the stage in Figliulo Recital Hall for a special student-led chamber music performance. This dynamic group of eight musicians has been excited by their growth in recent years, beginning in 2023 with just two violinists and since expanding instruments to include violas, cellos, and a flute. Representing a variety of majors and class years, the musicians are united by a shared passion for collaborative performance.

This performance marks the string ensemble’s first fully student-led concert on campus and serves as a culmination of a year of dedicated rehearsal and musical growth. The program will feature classical works by Vivaldi, Mozart, Strauss, and Brahms, highlighted by multiple movements from Mozart’s “Eine kleine Nachtmusik,” offering audiences a more complete experience of the beloved work beyond its famous opening movement. Each work will be briefly introduced by a student performer, offering audience members insight into the composer and the historical and musical context of the piece.

This event is hosted by the Saint Mary’s Co-Curricular Arts program. Admission is free and open to the public.
