Jacob Fiala B’26 describes his time at Saint Mary’s in two ways: fun-filled and life-giving.

The philosophy major from Welcome, Minn., primarily focuses on the relationships he’s built here these past four years — but he can’t help but also mention the beauty of the Winona Campus.

“One of the things that made my time here enjoyable is the friendships I made, both in the seminary and on campus,” he said. “I could not be more surrounded by a group of genuinely amazing people. There is always something going on that students can take part in, and every day there is always someone that meets you with a smile.

He also believes Saint Mary’s academics are special because of the caring and knowledgeable faculty and staff. “My academic experience was very positive, as I got to develop strong relationships with my professors over the years,” he said. “Saint Mary’s is blessed with wonderful faculty and staff. The small class sizes really helped me feel seen and known. Even when the material was challenging, it was always easy to receive assistance from both professors and fellow students.”

Fiala feels prepared for the next step in his vocational journey, which includes attending the Saint Paul Seminary for four years in pursuit of ordination in the diocesan priesthood.

“Saint Mary’s has prepared me for the future by enhancing my critical thinking skills through rigorous studies as a philosophy major. This will be very helpful for continuing studies and for leadership in a parish,” he said. “In addition, Saint Mary’s both emphasizes leadership as a part of one’s character and provides opportunities to take on leadership roles.”

He believes his time on Student Senate gave him a chance to grow in collaboration and confidence skills as a leader. He also was a new student orientation leader and served on the Knights of Columbus.

His advice to incoming students is “to trust in God every step of the way, and surround yourself with friends who will help you grow as a person and future leader.” And, Fiala believes Saint Mary’s will help with each step in your college career.

“Even when challenges arise and the days get more arduous, there is always some piece of joy that can be easily found at Saint Mary’s,” he said.
