At Saint Mary’s, Maggie Newhouse has learned leadership skills in the classroom, on the court, and in front of her peers. Following graduate school, she hopes to use these skills to protect and improve the health of vulnerable populations.

A senior on the Cardinal basketball team, Newhouse says she loves the community she and her teammates have built. “It’s fun to play a sport that you love and be competitive with people who care about you on and off the court,” she said. The beauty of her team, she says, is they all have opportunities to lead in their own way.

Now serving in her second year as president of student senate, Newhouse has enjoyed building connections with students, faculty, and administrators. “It has made me a more well-rounded student,” she said. “I’ve gotten encouragement, but I’ve also grown through criticism and feedback as well.”

The health humanities and Spanish double major is currently applying to graduate school. Her goal is to be a public health director to help address health disparities, particularly for vulnerable populations, by addressing policies and programs. She’d particularly like to work with Spanish-speaking populations.

She believes she’s ready. “I’ve been challenged here and been given so many opportunities to excel,” she said. “I’ve become an incredibly detail-oriented person, a much better writer, and have developed leadership and people skills, as well the character and values that grad schools are looking for.”
