Saint Mary’s senior Callahan Nauss received some good advice from his father who told him, “Don’t do something because you think I’ll like it; do something because you’ll like it.”
Nauss received the opportunity to not only finish up his double major in business intelligence analytics and accounting while simultaneously getting a jump start on an M.S. in Business Intelligence and Data Analytics. He followed his father’s advice. He jumped at the chance to get ahead in a field HE is interested in.
Nauss admits he’s followed in the footsteps of his father, who started a marketing tech firm when Callahan was a boy. “I’ve always been drawn to business and numbers; it’s what I excel at,” he said.
As time went on, both Nauss and his older brother (who earned an MBA from Saint Mary’s) have helped with the business.
“I work for my dad as a business intelligence analyst,” he said. “With my master’s, I’ll become a data scientist and do consulting for the business.”
This spring, after earning his bachelor’s degree, he’ll only have four summer online classes left before he earns a master’s degree that’s highly in demand.
“I got an email from my professor that the last of my business intelligence classes could be switched to the master’s versions, and I could get credit for both,” he said. “Having that opportunity helped me a lot.” He advises other students looking to get ahead: “Don’t let 600-level classes intimidate you. They still have that Saint Mary’s feel. You can still reach out to professors and get the help that you need.”
