Most undergraduate students see summer break as an opportunity to get away from academics, but for biochemistry student Alyssa Jones, it was an opportunity for further research and scientific exploration.

In the summer of 2023, Jones spent her break on the Winona Campus working with Dr. Heidi Dahlmann to research user-friendly catalysts for speeding up a carbon-carbon bond-forming reaction called carbonyl-olefin metathesis. These kinds of reactions can be used in synthesizing pharmaceutical compounds, organic electronics, and flavors or dyes. This research was supported by a grant from Organic Syntheses, Inc.

Jones’ summer research project was just the beginning of the academic achievements ahead of her. Last spring, she graduated from Saint Mary’s as the first student in the chemistry department to complete the American Chemical Society (ACS) certified biochemistry major. Her graduation marked a historic milestone for Saint Mary’s chemistry department, as it reflected their commitment to offering nationally recognized programs in the sciences.

“Graduating our first ACS-certified biochemistry major is a moment of pride for the Department and the University,” said Nathan Lien, Chair of the Chemistry Department. “This is recognition that our graduates not only have knowledge and skills, but are able to think critically, communicate effectively, and consider the broader impact of their work.”

This May, four more biochemistry students will graduate with ACS certified degrees. The Chemistry Department received approval from the ACS in early Spring 2024. This combines rigorous coursework in the five areas of chemistry (organic, inorganic, analytical, physical, and biochemistry) with hands-on laboratory experiences designed to meet the professional standards of the American Chemical Society. Certification assures that graduates are exceptionally well-prepared for careers in industry and post-graduate study.

Jones is now enrolled in the Mayo Clinic Medical Laboratory Science Program where she gets to engage in hands-on lab work everyday. Thanks to her ACS certified biochemistry degree, she will get to embark on a career in research and help advance our understanding of medicine and human biology.
