It’s a matter of dark matter. Evan Shockley ’14, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Chicago, was quoted in The New York Times (as well as in a number of science publications). Shockley, who double majored in mathematics and physics at Saint Mary’s, acknowledges the significance of “pings” scientists have recently discovered coming from a vat of liquid xenon underneath a mountain in Italy — but stresses it’s too early to call it a major discovery.
