SGPP faculty member receives Brother Julius Winkler award

September 15, 2020

Stories

Each year, the Brother Julius Winkler, FSC Adjunct Faculty Recognition Award is presented to a Schools of Graduate and Professional Programs (SGPP) course contracted faculty member who has sustained excellence in teaching and contributing to Saint Mary’s University by serving as a model of the Lasallian spirit in the classroom. Among other criteria, this award recognizes faculty for demonstrating excellence, effectiveness, and integrity.

This year’s award goes to Sondra Schroeder-Davis, Ph.D., who is completing her 20th academic year as an associate professor in the Master of Arts in Education program.

Watch the virtual recognition ceremony:

In total, Dr. Schroeder-Davis has taught more than 77 sections of coursework over the past 20 years. These courses cover a wide variety of educational topics within the Master of Arts in Education program and the Master of Arts in Teaching program.

Dr. Schroeder-Davis’ commitment to her students extends beyond the classroom as she helps her learners conceptualize their research studies, assists them in obtaining IRB approval, provides proofreading and editing support, and mentors all students to “Stay with it! You’ve got this!”

Students consistently give Dr. Schroeder-Davis high ratings and praise, such as:

  • “I thought the layout of this class through our instructor was amazing. I am not sure how another instructor would teach this class but I cannot imagine learning from anyone other than Sondra.”
  • “Sondra is the best professor I have ever had!”
  • “Sondra is the QUEEN of the Action Research Project!”
  • “We could not have asked for a better instructor during [a tough course like this]. Sondra is AMAZING!”

Dr. Schroeder-Davis is an example of responsiveness, trust, flexibility, and patience. Most importantly, in the words of Lisa Delpit, “Dr. Schroeder-Davis exemplifies what it means to be a “warm demander.” She has the ability to “expect a great deal of [her] students, convince them of their own brilliance, and help them to reach their potential in a disciplined and structured environment.”

Join us in congratulating Dr. Schroeder-Davis!
